The field of orthodontics serves to correct the misalignment of the jaw and teeth. Orthodontic treatments may be performed for functional and/or aesthetic reasons.

The objective of a dental correction may be evenly positioned, beautiful teeth. However, sometimes this is also medically necessary in order to prevent future damage caused by dental misalignments. This can include excessive and one-sided wear and strain on teeth, the divergence of teeth, the tipping of teeth into gaps after tooth loss, speech impairments and more. It is absolutely essential that the jaw and teeth are correctly aligned in order to be able to chew, swallow and talk properly.

To correct misalignments, fixed or removable dental braces can be used for adults and children, depending on the patient and chosen treatment method.

Certain dental misalignments cannot be corrected adequately or as desired using removable dental braces. In these cases, fixed dental braces made from metal or ceramics are used. Fixed dental braces include forced stretching or fixed brackets.

Forced stretching stretches the upper jaw if it is too narrow compared to the lower jaw. The upper jaw can be stretched until the age of around 13 years. After this point, the midpalatal suture ossifies in the upper jaw, meaning stretching may only be achieved through orthodontic surgery.

Today, individual tooth positions and the position of teeth in the upper jaw compared to those in the lower jaw can be adjusted highly precisely using fixed brackets. These brackets may also be used with elastics if necessary.

Adults can also opt for white ceramic brackets, the colour of which is adjusted to the teeth.

Fixed dental braces typically have to be worn for around two years. The exact duration depends on the extent of the tooth movements.

When wearing braces, it is particularly important to ensure thorough and regular dental care and hygiene.

To ensure the success of the treatment and stabilise the result achieved, the use of retainers after removing the fixed dental braces is essential. Indeed, removable braces are also sometimes prescribed for a year following treatment.

Adult patients often desire an invisible dental correction. For this purpose, transparent splints are used, which the patient is able to insert and remove themselves.

We primarily use the Invisalign© system. Invisalign© dental splints are worn both day and night; they are only removed when eating or brushing. Invisalign© dental splints are very thin, which means they are comfortable to wear and do not impede speaking.

Removable dental braces are used to correct minor tooth or jaw misalignments.

They are particularly suitable for creating space or as a placeholder for future permanent teeth. They can also compensate for a recessed lower jaw compared to the upper jaw.

Removable dental braces typically consist of a metal bracket and a cover, or a bespoke plastic base offered in a range of colours, which can be augmented with individual images. Plastic dental braces can be reduced or expanded using small screws. The jaw is thus stretched slightly, gaps opened or closed, and teeth moved into the correct position.

Removable orthodontic appliances include Headgear, Monoblock, SAHM, plates and transparent splint systems such as Orthofolio, Invisalign etc.
